Three Recent Upstarts That Have Been Successful in the Luxury Handbag Market

By Tommy Bland

In the last 10 years, three new fashion labels have been established and had their products have risen into the upper echelon of the luxury handbag market. These three companies; Juicy Couture, Botkier, and Kooba have joined such perennial favorites as; Louis Vuitton, Aramis, and Guchi as being 'must have' bags.

The Juicy Couture fashion apparel company was started by Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Taylor in 1994 as a designer t-shirt collection. By the late 1990's Juicy Couture made a foray into women's sportswear and tracksuits. Establishing a popular reputation for their urban-influenced designs and comfortable wear, Juicy Couture tracksuits quickly became popular when celebrities such as Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, and Cameron Diaz were photographed wearing the label. With the success of the women's tracksuit, Juicy Couture expanded their line to include casual apparel, shoes, swimwear, and handbags.

Today, juicy couture handbags are known for being lush, fun, and flashy. Available in a variety of styles such as hobo, shopper, satchels, and even diaper bags; having a Juicy Couture bag on your arm or shoulder expresses an attitude of self-assured and carefree with a touch of sassy.

The Botkier line of handbags was launched by a budding fashion photographer in New York City, Monica Botkier. She began designing her own handbags because she wanted a bucket bag that she could carry her photography equipment in and still look stylish among the fashion-conscious crowd she had for clientele. Her first bag, the Trigger, impressed her friends, co-workers, and clientele so much that she was inspired to try her hand in the competitive world of designer handbags. With a professional's eye for detail and artistry, Botkier launched her first collection in 2003. Since the initial success, the label has grown and expanded to include such lines as Black Rose, Bryant, Cairo, and Bianca.

The leading designer of modern-vintage handbags is Kooba. The label was started by a mother and daughter team, Bonnie and Abbe Held in 1998. The use of older designs with modern fabrics and hardware got Kooba bags noticed right away by fashion show co-ordinators. The handbags were featured in runway shoes beginning in 1999 and soon after, the orders for Kooba bags exceeded the supply. Nowadays, Kooba is regularly featured in glamour magazines such as Glamour and In Style. Available in satchel, bucket, hobo styles and more, the line is noted for its designs which are stylish but not trendy; allowing Kooba bags to easily complement any outfit in a wardrobe.

With such a wide selection of luxury handbags to choose from, now is a great time to find the bag that is for you. Next time you are shopping for a bag, why not take a chance on something new.
